How I got into Alternative Health

I was born in Poland and grew up on a farm. When I was 14, I contracted the Asiatic Flu and had a temperature of 40 degrees for several days. I recovered, but only temporarily as the fever kept returning. The doctor assured my mother that I would be all right, but a mother’s instinct often tends to be superior to a doctor’s judgment and she took me to a homeopath. He happened to be trained in iridology. He looked into my eyes and said, “There is something wrong with this boy’s left lung”. My mother took me at once to a tuberculosis hospital, where the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis was confirmed. The recovery took the better part of a year, and during that time I became very impressed with the doctors who took care of me. I promised myself that if I recovered, I would become a doctor.

When I immigrated to Canada in 1972, I needed to re-qualify for my medical credentials. I was able to obtain an internship at Saskatoon City Hospital where I worked from 1975-76. By serendipity, I was assigned to Dr. Abram Hoffer for my rotation in psychiatry. Those 3 months totally transformed my approach to medicine. It was nothing less than a revolution for me. Here I saw people with severe psychiatric disorders being hospitalized and Dr. Hoffer – instead of prescribing tranquilizers and various psychotropic medications – gave them niacin (Vitamin B3) zinc, and various other vitamins and minerals, as well as prescribing fundamental changes to their diets. Their delusions disappeared, and they returned to a normal life.

I could not believe it. Here I saw for the first time orthomolecular medicine in action – a branch of medicine I know nothing about. All my training was completely conventional up until that point.

In 1979 I attended a conference at the recommendation of a colleague for the American Academy of Environmental Medicine.  There I saw a presentation from Dr. Rapp where she was testing a child for food sensitivities. When she tested the child for oats, the child had a dramatic reaction – he began to thrash about and scream. When Dr. Rapp established an administered the neutralizing dose, the child rapidly recovered. Then Dr. Rapp asked “Do you remember anything that happened during the last 2 hours?” The child, genuinely bewildered, said, “No, I don’t.”

Well, at that point I got goosebumps and I knew, deep down and without any doubt, that this was the medicine I had to practice. Whatever I had learned in standard medicine did not even consider the toxicity of ordinary food. What’s more, the same approach, I learned, could be taken in treating the toxic effects of environmental chemicals. Standard medicine teaches how to classify symptoms, what drugs to use to control them and how to use them cautiously to prevent their toxicity from killing the patient. The key point I took away from this conference was revolutionary:  the offending cause could be found, eliminated if possible and/or treated. I found an entirely new way of what it means to live a clean lifestyle to improve health by lowering the total exposure load of various toxins on the body..

I went back to Toronto and completely turned my practice around to be focused on Environmental Health.  Cut to 2010, after decades in alternative health, I retired my medical license. I must like revolutions because I was introduced to energy healing and embarked on a whole new paradigm of healing again with EcoHealth and Wellness. From all my years of learning and seeing clients, I truly believe that healing is possible for everyone.

groundbreaker-award
Dr. Krop has been awarded one of the Groundbreaker Awards for Excellence in Complementary & Alternative Medicine

The Dr. Rogers Prize for Excellence in Complementary and Alternative Medicine is pleased to announce the winners of the Dr. Rogers Prize Groundbreaker Awards. Five Canadian leaders in health care have been selected by an international jury in recognition of their lifetime of dedication to patient care, often in the face of adversity.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Dr. Rogers Prize, the Groundbreaker Awards are a one-time award to honour those individuals whose personal conviction to pursue practices above and beyond the medical status quo prepared the way for future leaders, evocative of Sir Isaac Newton’s famous quote –

“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Dr. Jozef Krop, Recipient, Groundbreaker Award

Born in 1944 in Poland, a personal experience with tuberculosis inspired Jozef Krop to become a doctor. He studied medicine at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków (1962 – 1968). After immigrating to Canada in 1972, he completed his medical internship at Saskatoon City Hospital where he worked with psychiatrist Dr. Abram Hoffer. Impressed by Dr. Hoffer’s success using dietary interventions and therapeutic doses of Vitamins B3, C and B6 to treat schizophrenia, Dr. Krop went on to train in orthomolecular and environmental medicine, and became a Fellow of the American Academy for Environmental Medicine in 1983. From 1984 to 1988, he was involved in government-initiated, university-based projects exploring the potential benefit of environmental medicine for Canadians and presented before the Brundtland Commission. The College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSO) pursued disciplinary action against him (1989-2010) – without patient complaint or harm – with the documented intent of stopping his use of particular medical modalities despite their published scientific basis. Several colleagues endured similar persecution. Two decades of nation-wide publicity resulting in public pressure brought changes to medical legislation. The treatment modalities which the CPSO attempted to discredit are now accepted and recognized by mainstream medicine. The legal success achieved on his behalf is today taught in law school (i.e., the Krop Defense). The Canadian Human Rights Commission’s 2007 Report required accommodation for Environmental Sensitivities. Dr. Krop is currently involved in introducing environmental medicine to the curriculum at the University of Łódź in Poland. His work is documented in various scientific papers and in his book Healing the Planet One Patient At a Time.

The Gala Award Dinner is to be held in Toronto on Friday, February 24, 2017.

Honouring the Woman – Exclusive Workshop

Honouring the Woman

Honouring the Woman is a workshop led by Australian-Canadian healer and doula, Jess Krop. www.withindoula.com.au

Honouring the Woman is a woman-only event where women gather in circle and have the opportunity to deepen our experience of being a woman.

Two years of circles have been benefiting Australian women – and now Canadian women can experience this transformational event as Jess is bringing her workshop to Canada this summer at EcoHealth and Wellness.

In this workshop, we will explore our cycles, Goddesses, womb magic, the moon, learn ritual and honor ourselves as amazing women. We will sit in circle, share laughter and tears, create art, eat chocolate and learn much about ourselves. It is an experiential workshop including art, drum journeys, circles, and celebration!

 Day 1:

– What is a women’s circle? A red tent? Why are we sitting here and what does it all mean? This is the intro circle, where we will be getting to know each other and get comfortable in the space; a time to go through what we will be covering and how we will be doing it.

– The Cycles: your menstrual cycle, the moon cycle, the growth cycle, the seasonal cycle. Exploring and learning about how they are all esentially the same cycle played out in different time and how this creates a connection between us all. We will be doing a pairs process exploring our menarche (first bleed) and how that has effected our lives.

– We explore shamanic process and drum journeying: what is it and how can it assist us in our lives. We will do a drum journey to meet our womb goddess.

Day 2:

– An exploration of Goddesses and archetypes. What are they? How do they serve us? Finding out our dominant goddess archetypes and what we can learn from that.

-We look at the concept of honouring ourselves. Do we? Does society? How is being a woman played out in our world? We will learn the elements of ritual and perform a ritual to honour our bleeding and being women. Finally we will each be giving each other a woman blessing to honour ourselves as amazing, strong and powerful women.

The Details:

There is only space for 6 women at the circle – in order to keep it a personal and intimate event.

Detox from Traffic

This article in the Wall Street Journal describes something you might never think about but probably are exposed to every day: on the harmful effects of traffic pollutants on human health.

https://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203733504577024000381790904.html

Detoxing from daily pollutants is an important part of keeping healthy. Sauna and supplement support help keep the body’s detoxification organs working well to process the pollutants we’re exposed to on a daily basis.

How does breast tissue affect mammogram results?

How does breast tissue affect mammogram results?

In mammography, changes in breast tissue can make it difficult to distinguish between normal tissue and tumors.

In young women, breasts are composed of firm glandular tissue. In mammography this density appears white.
Cancerous tumours also appear as white densities on a mammogram. Therefore, finding a cancerous tumor in a dense breast is similar to finding a cloud in a cloudy sky.

Thermography’s Role in Dense Breasts

Thermography does not look through the breast, but rather is a test of physiology. The blood flow to the tissue is reflected in the heat patterns the camera picks up. The abnormal blood flow to cancerous tissues will show up regardless of the density of the
breasts. For this reason, thermography is especially suited for the breast that would otherwise get multiple views with a mammogram.

Programmed to be Fat?

Programmed to be Fat?

Are the chemicals we’re exposed to in our air, water and food making us fat? This important program will be aired in Canada by the ‘Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’ (CBC) . It is is about the links between chemical pollutants and obesity. Many chemical pollutants have been linked to both Diabetes (directly) and to Obesity (which is a precursor to Diabetes).

Hope you watch this very important T.V. program on January 12th, 2012  at 8pm on David Suzuki’s ‘The Nature of Things”
Steering clear of chemicals as much as possible, and detoxing regularly through sauna or other detoxing drainage remedy programs is an important part over maintaining overall health.

Breast Care

What is breast thermography? Can it help me?

Breast Thermography Image

It is the use of Digital Infrared Imaging to detect abnormalities in the breast. It is non invasive and not painful. It is based on the principle that metabolic activity and vascular circulation in both pre-cancerous tissue and the area surrounding a developing breast cancer is almost always higher than in normal breast tissue.

In an ever-increasing need for nutrients, cancerous tumors increase circulation to their cells by holding open existing blood , and vessels, opening dormant vessels, and creating new ones. This process frequently results in an increase in regional surface temperatures of the breast. Thermography or DITI uses ultra-sensitive medical infrared camera and sophisticated computers to detect, analyze, and produce high-resolution images of these temperature variations. Because of DITI’s extreme sensitivity, these temperature variations may be among the earliest signs of breast cancer and/or pre-cancerous state of the breast.

Just as unique as a fingerprint, each patient has a particular infrared map of their breast. Any modification of this infrared map on images taken over months or years, may constitute an early sign of an abnormality. However, if a pathology is suspected, this information is used to recommend further examination and tests.

All images are read by certified physicians of DITI. and are kept on file for several years, for comparison of the previous images.

EARLY DETECTION MEANS LIFE

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and the risk increases with age. Risk is also higher in women whose close relatives have had the disease. Women without children, and those who have had their first child after the age of 30, also seem to be at higher risk. Current research indicates that 1 in every 8 women in the US will get breast cancer in their lifetime. DITI’s ability to to detect thermal signs that may suggest a pre-cancerous state of the breast at an extremely early stage, is a useful tool in early detection.

Thermpgraphy is available at EcoHealth by appointment the second Wednesday of each month.

Dr. Krop nominated for Dr. Rogers Prize

Dr. Krop at Dr. Rogers Prize Gala

Dr. Krop was nominated and short listed for the Dr. Rogers Prize this year. The Dr. Rogers Prize celebrates people who have made a significant contribution to complementary and alternative medicine in Canada.

Dr. Krop’s trailblazing approach to patients’ complex health issues was based in environmental effects on health decades before this became a recognized topic. His career is characterized by committed action and leadership in defending patients’ rights to safe and effective complementary therapies and doctors’ right to offer them.

In September Dr. Krop attended the Dr. Rogers Prize Gala in Vancouver BC – it was a beautiful and informative event and also inspiring to see so many committed to the practice of complementary health care. We would like to congratulate all the nominees, and especially the 2011 winner, Dr. Maria Verhoef of Calgary AB, for their efforts and fine achievements in advancing the complementary and alternative health model.
